1. Narrative Essay
When writing a narrative essay, one might think of it as telling a story. These essays are often anecdotal, experiential, and personal—allowing students to express themselves in a creative and, quite often, moving ways.
2. Argumentative or Persuasive Essay
Is an essay in which you try to convince readers to accept the argument you make. Through writing facts that back up your opinion or stance, you attempt to get readers to agree with your thinking.
3. Expository Essay
Requires the student to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner.
4. Compare and Contrast Essay
The purpose is to analyze the differences and/or the similarities of two distinct subjects. A good compare/contrast essay doesn’t only point out how the subjects are similar or different (or even both!). It uses those points to make a meaningful argument about the subjects
5. Descriptive Essay
Asks the student to describe something—object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation, etc. This genre encourages the student’s ability to create a written account of a particular experience.
6. Application Essay
An essay written by students to get admission in a reputed educational institution. It typically consists of a statement of purpose or a personal statement.
7. Case Study Essay
The purpose of a case study essay is to provide with a more detailed and authentic assessment of an event or a situation. A case study is a rational piece of write-up which evidently comprises of thorough research and proficient application of concepts, theories and views.
8. Response Essay
As opposed to more formal write-ups, the application of the first person can be adopted in a response essay. In this type of paper, you will still have to prepare a formal evaluation of the piece of work you’re analyzing (this could be a book, a work of art, or a film), but you also have the liberty to put forward your impressions and perceptions to the paper.
9. Exploratory Essay
An exploratory essay is, in essence, a retrospective of your writing and thinking process as you work through a problem. It describes when, how, and why you completed certain types of research.
10. Term Paper Essay
Term paper is an elaborate piece of writing on a certain subject taken from the curriculum that a student follows during school or college term. It’s almost similar to a research paper that is produced by students during the span of an academic term.
